Visiting Marktbreit

Famous and much photographed "Malerwinkel" or Painter's Corner, with the town hall at center.

(Click on any photo to see a larger view)

The other side of Malerwinkel with the Rathaus or
Town Hall at left. Part of this was destroyed in
1945 during WWII

Like many small towns in Germany, Marktbreit has been hurt by large, modern shopping centers with their easy parking and open, modern spaces. Shops in medieval towns can't compete.

The historic Zum Loewen (The Lion) Gasthaus and Hotel is the second oldest in Bavaria after "Zum Riesen"
in Miltenberg am Main

Interesting old door bells on a house in the
center of the town

The old, 17th century brewery. It would be common for a town this size to have several. People in the old days didn't drink water -
it was too dangerous.

The castle was built in the Renaissance, 1580, by the local ruler Georg Ludwig von Seinsheim as the
town palace and home for widows.

The tower of St. Nikolai, the Protestant Church,
dominates the skyline of Marktbreit.
In the foreground, a war memorial.

Balcony at the rear of the church and some of the many scenes from the Bible which are on the back and
north side of the church

Scenes from what is called the
"Armenbibel" (Poor Bible?)

The tower and choir (front) of the church are much older than the rest of the building, dating from the early Gothic period (around 1200) notice the thickness of the wall, about five feet. The main part of the church was added in
1438 and enlarged in 1590-96. During the so-called "Schwarzenberger Time" (This must be in
reference to the ruling family of Marktbreit) the special reserved seating area was added. (Shown Below)

(date on the font)

 Before the Protestant Reformation
this was a Catholic Church.
This is where the bread and
wine would have been stored.

People would cheat the tax man by building each
successive floorout from the one below, as you were
taxed on space taken up on the ground.
This system changed in the late 1500s.

 Quiet, tourist-free Marktbreit

This tower, called the Flurersturm, was once the home of the "Kuhhirten" or cow herder. It was also the home of the "Flurer," an old word which has no modern
translation. (Something we can discover together in September)

Eastern Wall of the town, notice the little house
built right on top of the wall, common in areas
prone to flooding

A very old crane used to hoist cargo onto barges and rafts on the
Main River, which flows right past Marktbreit

See you soon in Marktbreit, Bavaria!
